# Resolve a swap problem

> Resume a Swaptopia swap after a closed tab, and find out what each on-screen message means and what to do when a payment or invoice does not go through.

Each entry below matches a message or situation you see on screen.

## Resume or unblock a swap

<AccordionGroup>
<Accordion title="You closed the tab or the browser during a swap" id="resume-a-swap-after-closing-the-tab">
Reopen [labs.second.tech/swaptopia](https://labs.second.tech/swaptopia/) in the same browser, on the same network. The swap picks up where it stopped, on the same stage. If your browser asks whether to leave the page when you close it, confirm. Swaptopia has already saved the swap.

Each stage says whether it needs the tab:

* **You can close this tab and come back:** Swaptopia is waiting for your bitcoin to arrive at the address, or for your Lightning invoice. For a Lightning-to-bitcoin swap, reopen the page before you pay the invoice.
* **Keep this tab open while the payment settles:** Swaptopia is claiming the Lightning payment that just arrived. Reopen the page as soon as you can, so Swaptopia can finish the swap.
* **Keep this tab open:** Swaptopia is working and needs the tab.

A Lightning-to-bitcoin swap whose invoice expired while the tab was closed does not resume. Start a new swap.

On another device, [restore the seed phrase](/docs/swaptopia/wallet#restore-your-wallet-from-the-seed-phrase) to recover your sats on Ark, then start a new swap.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""Swaptopia is already open in another tab of this browser."">
One tab owns the wallet at a time. Use the tab that already has Swaptopia open, or close it and select **Retry** here.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""A swap is already in progress. Finish or cancel it first."">
Swaptopia runs one swap at a time per network. Reopen the page. It opens on the swap in progress, where you can finish it. While the swap is still waiting for your payment or your bitcoin, you can also select **Cancel**.

If you see "A swap is in progress in another tab of this page. Finish or cancel it there first." or "This swap is already running in another tab. Close this one or keep the other open.", switch to your other tab and close this one.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""No response from the wallet for N min."">
Reload the page. The swap resumes where it left off.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""Checking an earlier send"">
Swaptopia cannot tell yet whether an earlier payment went out, so it holds the sats and sends nothing twice. Wait a minute and select **Check again**.
</Accordion>

## Fix a bitcoin-to-Lightning swap

<AccordionGroup>
<Accordion title=""Received N sats. At least M sats are needed." or "N sats arrived, but M sats is what reaches the server…"" id="received-less-than-the-minimum">
Too little arrived at the address for the Ark server to board it. The server counts what is left after the boarding transaction's miner fee, so even exactly its minimum falls short. Send the amount the message names ("Send at least N more sats to the same address") from your on-chain wallet app. Swaptopia waits, and swaps everything at the address once the total clears the minimum. The minimum is on [Fees and limits](/docs/swaptopia/fees-and-limits#amount-limits).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Less or more bitcoin arrived than the amount shown">
Swaptopia swaps whatever arrives at the address and prices the Lightning invoice from that amount, not from the figures on the swap screen. The **Create a Lightning invoice** screen shows the exact figure to use.

If more arrives than one swap can carry, the screen says "N sats arrived; M sats is the most one swap can carry. The rest stays in this wallet for your next swap." Once this swap ends, Swaptopia boards the rest onto Ark while the swap screen is open, if it reaches the minimum for a bitcoin swap. It then joins your next swap as [leftover sats](/docs/swaptopia/wallet#send-leftover-sats).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""That invoice asks for N sats; the sats here pay for M..."">
Create an invoice for exactly the figure the message gives, and paste it again. On the **Create a Lightning invoice** screen, **Copy amount** copies that figure.

Paste a Lightning address (`name@domain`) instead if your Lightning wallet app has one. Swaptopia then pays the exact figure to it, with no invoice to size.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""That invoice has expired."">
Create a fresh invoice for the same amount, just before you paste it. A Lightning address avoids this, since Swaptopia fetches a fresh invoice from it when it pays.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""Where should the sats go?" or the Lightning payment did not go through">
Your bitcoin is in the wallet, but Swaptopia could not deliver it. The message "The Lightning payment did not go through. The recipient may be offline or unreachable right now." means Swaptopia could not pay the invoice. Either:

* Paste another Lightning invoice for the exact figure shown, or a Lightning address, and select **Send**.
* Select **Later**. The sats stay in the wallet as [leftover sats](/docs/swaptopia/wallet#send-leftover-sats) and join your next swap.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="You selected Cancel after your bitcoin arrived">
Cancelling does not send the bitcoin back. The drawer under **Wallet** reports it as "N sats arrived on-chain outside a swap." and says what comes next. Once it confirms, Swaptopia boards it onto Ark while the swap screen is open. It then joins your next swap as [leftover sats](/docs/swaptopia/wallet#send-leftover-sats).

If the amount stays under the Ark server's minimum after the boarding miner fee, the drawer says it "cannot move into this wallet on its own". It then names a top-up amount and an address. Send that amount to that address from your on-chain wallet app. To recover the bitcoin without topping up, restore the seed phrase in an on-chain wallet app that supports taproot (BIP86) addresses.
</Accordion>
</AccordionGroup>

## Fix a Lightning-to-bitcoin swap

<AccordionGroup>
<Accordion title=""The server has dropped this invoice, so it can no longer be paid."">
Swaptopia's invoice is no longer on the Ark server. Either nobody paid it in time, or your payment arrived while this tab was closed and Swaptopia could not claim it before the Ark server's hold timeout. A payment goes back to your Lightning wallet app on its own. Select **Cancel** and start the swap again, then keep the tab open when you pay.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""N sats leave less than 1,000 sats after the on-chain fee."">
An on-chain payout must leave at least 1,000 sats after fees. Select **Later** to keep the sats in the wallet as [leftover sats](/docs/swaptopia/wallet#send-leftover-sats). To send them over Lightning, select the **Swap direction** button until **Lightning** sits under **You receive**, then select **Send now**. Otherwise they join your next swap.
</Accordion>
